What is Skills Therapy?

Skills therapy focuses on taking the tools your child has already been working on, such as emotional regulation strategies, communication skills, routines, problem-solving, or social skills, and helping them apply those skills in real-world situations. It bridges the gap between insight and action, turning therapeutic concepts into daily habits.

One of the most unique aspects of skills therapy is that the skills therapist comes to your child, meeting them in the setting that best supports their learning. This may be your home, school, or a community environment, wherever those skills are most needed. By working within your child’s natural surroundings, the therapist can model strategies, guide practice, and support your child through challenges as they happen.

Skills therapy is collaborative, active, and tailored to your child’s goals. The skills therapist works closely with your family and your child’s primary therapist to ensure consistency, communication, and alignment across the entire treatment team.

This approach helps your child build confidence, independence, and real-life mastery, taking what they learn in therapy and turning it into meaningful, lasting change.
