Engaging with our five senses can help ground us and bring our nervous system back to a state of calm. Through engaging our senses, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps us relax, lowers our cortisol levels, and helps regulate our stress responses.
This is a sensory meditation that you can use to help yourself find calm at any time. It takes only about 5-10 minutes to complete.
Instructions:
To begin, imagine a place, real or imaginary, were you feel peaceful, safe, and relaxed. Then slowly close your eyes and engage your five senses.
· Sight: What do you see? What colors are in your safe place? What objects do you see?
· Sound: Are there any noises or sounds? What can you hear?
· Touch: What is the temperature like? What textures can you feel?
· Smell: Can you smell anything?
· Taste: Is there anything to taste? What does it taste like?
Remember all of the senses you engaged and how you felt in your safe place. You can go back to your safe place at any time.
When you are ready, take a few deep breaths and open your eyes.
